Where does the difference in size come from?
Steam uses a special compression method that allows Steam to create much smaller files. Disadvantage: You need a special decompressor which, presumably, is only available to Steam. As a private person, you therefore have to fall back on conventional methods. A ZIP file is just right because many operating systems can unzip them without additional programs. Disadvantage: The file becomes extremely large. There are also methods like RAR or 7z, but these require additional programs that many find too complicated.
